Do you still need a one-way mirror for focus groups?
You no longer have to choose. The classic one-way mirror gives observers live full-room sightlines; a produced multicamera feed gives them close-ups, multiple angles, clean mixed audio, and a stream for everyone who didn't fly in. The strongest 2026 setup runs both. What the mirror was actually for
The one-way mirror solved a 1960s problem with 1960s technology: clients needed to watch live, and cameras were too intrusive, too low-quality, or too expensive to do the job. The mirror let a backroom full of stakeholders observe in real time at zero technical complexity. For half a century it worked, and it became the visual shorthand for the entire industry — which is precisely the problem.
What the feed adds that glass can't
Respondents know either way — so manage the room, not the secret
Every respondent who has ever watched television knows what a wall-sized mirror in a conference room means. Moderators disclose observation anyway (ethically, they must) — so the mirror provides no concealment, only atmosphere. In a windowless corporate suite, that atmosphere reads as interrogation room, and people perform for the glass. The fix isn't necessarily removing the mirror — it's removing the lab around it. The camera feed simply shows more

Half your observers aren't in the building
The mirror serves only the people physically behind it. The produced feed serves them and the brand team in Chicago and the agency partner in London, identically and simultaneously. Since remote observation became default, the mirror's one advantage — zero-tech live viewing — matters only to whoever flew in.
Where the mirror genuinely earns its keep
The glass still does things screens can't:
- Continuous full-room sightlines. Kid research, dyad work, and activity-based sessions where observers must read the whole physical space at once, uncut and unframed.
- Client mandate. Some research buyers specify mirror facilities by policy. The facility exists to serve the research; if the protocol says mirror, book a mirror.
- Ambient, fatigue-free viewing. Six hours of live glass is easier on a backroom than six hours of monitor — many veteran researchers simply read groups better through it.
Which is why the right question isn't mirror or feed — it's whether your facility makes you pick one.
What a complete observation setup looks like in 2026
The standard, drawn from building both kinds of backroom:
- A genuinely separate, comfortable observation zone — at USL, an observation area plus a mezzanine seating 10–15, with work surfaces and decent chairs.
- Live multicamera feed on a large monitor, with the angles cut by someone who has watched ten thousand groups and knows when to push in.
- Direct mixed audio with local volume control.
- A note path to the moderator that doesn't disrupt the group.
- The same feed streamed privately to remote stakeholders, tested before group one.
The deeper point
The mirror question is really the environment question. Glass only hurts when the room around it feels like a lab — that's the premise of the daylight-loft model this facility pioneered. Put the mirror behind a drop-down wall inside a real room, add the produced feed, and observers get everything while respondents talk like people. After thirty years on both sides of the glass, that's the configuration we'd build again every time.
